Reforestation, renaturalisation of peatlands, CO2 removal from the air: what contribution can negative emissions make to achieving climate protection targets in Germany? To answer this question, the German Energy Agency (dena) is developing the long-term strategy on negative emissions for dealing with unavoidable residual emissions (LNe) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK).

As a scientific basis for the strategy, Prognos, together with the Öko-Institut, is preparing a scenario analysis that models possible development paths for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from the atmosphere.

Needs, potentials and interactions of negative emissions

The study also determines a target value for a net-negative greenhouse gas balance for the year 2060 and derives interim targets for technical sinks for the key years 2035, 2040 and 2045. As a range of methods and technologies can be used to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, the project team analyses the various requirements, potentials and interactions of negative emissions.

Our approach

Prognos and the Öko-Institut will model three different scenarios for the LNe, create CDR portfolios with different focal points and derive targets for technical CDR for the reference years. The focus is on modelling residual emissions and the potential of the various CO2 removal options.
