The global economy is facing ever greater challenges: The ever-increasing digitalisation of all areas of life, the already noticeable consequences of climate change and enormous geopolitical uncertainties – all these circumstances are reasons for a profound change in economic structures.

As one of the largest industrial region in the EU, North Rhine-Westphalia in particular is facing these major challenges. The region is going through a twin transformation, the green and digital transformation of the economy. These two processes are taking place simultaneously, leading to an increased impact on the economy, labour market and society.

However, the transformation processes also offer a wide range of opportunities for North Rhine-Westphalia to take a leading position in the field of disruptive digital, green and other technologies and to expand its competitiveness as a business location.

Against this backdrop, Prognos has developed a dossier as part of the NRW.innovativ competence centre that highlights the role of cluster organisations in the successful implementation of these transformation processes. To this end, the challenges that arise in the course of transformation processes and the resulting implications for North Rhine-Westphalia are first identified. The dossier then examines the role of cluster organisations in general and the specific contributions of the cluster landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Finally, the paper provides recommendations for action that are necessary to further strengthen the contributions of cluster organisations to transformation processes.
